I had a road traffic accident in November 2010 while driving to work which resulted in me being paralysed from the chest down. My life was turned upside down and I spent 8 months rehabilitating in hospital. Since my accident I have been largely reliant on a powered wheelchair to get around.
I started playing Powerchair Football around 3 years ago. My team Ayrshire Tigers are currently competing in the Scottish Powerchair Football League. The club was formed by South Ayrshire Access to Sport in 2015 in response to a lack of activities for powerchair users in the Ayrshire area. The Club aims to improve the health and wellbeing of people with disabilities in Ayrshire.
Since we began competing in the Scottish Powerchair Football League the team has come a long way from coming 6th in season 2015-16 to this season where we were runners up in the league. I've seen first-hand what a difference being part of the Tigers has made to the lives of our players including myself and I want to see us succeed for years to come.
I will be attempting to push my manual chair 5km around the athletics track at Dam Park Stadium in Ayr to help the club cover some of its running costs for next year.
I am able to push my manual chair because it is fitted with e-motion wheels which are wheels fitted with a power assist which makes it easier to push a manual chair if you have limited arm mobility. I’ve also recently had tendon transfer surgery on both my arms to help regain movement in my tricep muscles which I have strengthened in the gym since the surgery.
