2016 Scottish Powerchair Football Challenge Cup
Many thanks to the SRUC students, South Ayrshire Sport & Leisure, Westmarc for supplying some chairs, Adam McGovern for organising the tournament and of course the players from Kilmarnock FC who all contributed to a fantastic day at Bellahouston Leisure Centre on Sunday 28th February, a great advert for our sport in Scotland.
The plan was to draw two groups to play a round robin format with semi-final places being afforded to the top two finishers in each group. The day started with the draw, first out the hat, Queens Park Strollers followed by Clyde Alba, there were already murmurings of ” Group of Death” before the third team out was current Champions, Tayside Dynamos.
Rangers avoiding Celtic again in the Scottish Cup draw wouldn`t have drawn out the conspiracy theorists like this Challenge Cup draw.
However, fixtures were sorted, play got under way. Some great play was on show, our newest club “South Ayrshire Tigers” in particular showed their intentions by picking up their first win of the season.
Semi-Final 1, (Tayside Dynamos v South Ayrshire Tigers). A very tough game, however Tayside Dynamos experience proved too much for the Tigers who moved into the final.
Semi-Final 2, (Clyde Caledonia v Clyde Alba). Two very good teams battled through the match which ended in a 0-0 draw. Penalty shoot-out to see he goes into the final, after the “Group of Death” came what could only be described as “death by penalties”, it was fun watching particularly the antics of the goalkeepers. After three rounds of penalties the final place was decided on a coin toss, Clyde Alba through to the final.
Queens Park Strollers, Clyde Caledonia, Queens Park Spiders and the South Ayrshire Tigers managed to challenge the guys from Kilmarnock FC who were fantastic sports on the day, however it is safe to say don’t give up the day jobs lads!
The Final. As expected between these two auld rivals, a very tough and skill laden match ensued, this time however it was the Tayside Dynamos who came out on top to claim the inaugural Challenge Cup with a 1-0 victory.
Congratulations also went to Kieran Hooper Burns for picking up the Goal of the Tournament.
Congratulations also to Annmarie Robertson who collected the Ben Miller Memorial Trophy for the most sporting player on the day.
Lastly, thanks to everyone who attended and made the day a success, see you all next year.
